Job Title: Research Assistant

Organization: Shelby County Historical Society, Inc.

Location: Shelby County Museum & Archives, Columbiana, AL

Position Type: Part-time, Tuesday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. (Additional events may require weekend or after-hours work)

Reports to: Executive Director, Shelby County Museum & Archives

Job Description:

The Shelby County Historical Society, Inc. is seeking a dedicated and skilled Research Assistant to join the team at the Shelby County Museum & Archives. This part-time position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the preservation and dissemination of Shelby County's rich historical legacy.


  • Conduct in-depth genealogical research utilizing platforms such as,,,, and other relevant resources.

  • Demonstrate proficiency in written and interpersonal communication, providing excellent service to museum patrons in person and over the phone.

  • Work both independently and collaboratively to tackle research projects, contribute to exhibitions, and assist with events and programs.

  • Manage and supervise a small team of staff, volunteers, and interns, ensuring smooth operations within the museum and archives.

  • Utilize program management skills to organize and execute events, workshops, and special projects.

  • Complete administrative tasks as assigned, contributing to the efficient functioning of the museum and archives.

  • Familiarize oneself with the archive's extensive collection, including over 800 original county record books dating back to the early 1800s.


  • Excellent genealogical research skills and proficiency in platforms like,,, and

  • Strong aptitude for written and interpersonal communication.

  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.

  • Knowledge of program management preferred.

  • Familiarity with the history of Shelby County, AL, is highly desirable.

  • Physical capability for heavy lifting, as the position involves handling weighty archive books.

  • High school degree preferred.

Compensation and Benefits: 

Hourly wage of $10.50 to $13.50 per hour, depending upon experience. 

This position does not offer benefits.  Two weeks of vacation are provided in addition to being off the last two weeks of the year and national holidays.
